Time for election!

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 ― Datuk Seri Najib Razak called today for any transition of power after Election 2013 to be done peacefully, after Parliament was dissolved today.
“If there is a transition of power, whether at the federal or the state level, it has to be done peacefully,” said Najib (picture) during a live television broadcast today.
“This is our commitment in respecting the people’s voices and the nation’s interest,” added the prime minister.
Analysts have said that the outcome of the 13th general election, which is expected to be the most keenly contested in recent times, was in doubt for the first time in the country’s history.
Barisan Nasional (BN) lost its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority in Election 2008, ceding five states — Perak, Penang, Kedah, Selangor and Kelantan — to the loose opposition pact of PKR, DAP and PAS.
The Malaysian Insider understands that the 13th general election may be held as soon as April 20 or a week later on April 27, depending on the Election Commission’s (EC) arrangements.
Najib also warned Malaysians today against questioning the integrity of the electoral process in Election 2013.
The prime minister pointed out that other countries suffered instability when the results of their elections were doubted.
“There are certain political parties that sow suspicion and doubts about the integrity of the coming election,” said Najib.
Insaflah (Repent) and learn from what happened in other countries. The results of the elections in such countries were not accepted. The governments that were elected were rejected. The countries became unstable. National harmony was affected and the people suffered,” added the BN chairman.
Najib called on both BN and the opposition to make a commitment to respect the people’s decision in the 13th general election.
“Let’s pray together that this election will be run smoothly, peacefully and safely,” he said.
Najib also urged voters to back BN, saying that the ruling coalition would use a strong parliamentary majority to develop the nation.
“Do not gamble away the future of the young. Your votes will determine not only the direction of the country, but also the fate of your grandchildren,” he said.
“In this election, you are not only responsible for selecting your representatives in Parliament and in the state assembly, but also for choosing a government that will fulfil your aspirations,” added Najib.
Najib said that Malaysians could see for themselves the country’s transformation under his administration for the past four years.
“The government that we have today is a responsible government, one that upholds your interests and the nation’s interests,” he said.
Najib was appointed as Malaysia’s sixth prime minister exactly four years ago on April 3, 2009.
He announced last month his government’s achievements in the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) and the Government Transformation Programme (GTP).
Najib said last month that Malaysia’s Gross National Income (GNI) had grown 49 per cent or US$6,670 (RM20,677) to US$9,970 between 2009 and 2011.
According to the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu), Malaysia is expected to reach a GNI per capita of US$15,000 (RM 46,840) by 2018, two years before its target of 2020.
Besides the target GNI per capita, Malaysia also needs to create 3.3 million jobs and secure US$444 billion (RM1.3 trillion) in investments by 2020 in order to become a high-income nation.
Analysts have pointed out that the transformation initiatives under ETP and GTP contributed to Malaysia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 6.4 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of last year.
Najib also assured Malaysians in Sabah’s east coast today of their safety when casting their votes.
“The Malaysian security forces will carry out their responsibilities in ensuring the safety of the areas,” he said.
Najib formed the Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone) after the Sulu incursion in Sabah last February, which covers 10 districts: Kudat, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Beluran, Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Semporna, Kunak and Tawau

How you feel once Jalan Song Fly over is opening for traffic!

Part of Jalan Tun Jugah flyover would be opened to traffic tomorrow.

【Flyover 90 pct completed, says Yong】
KUCHING: The much-awaited Jalan Tun Jugah-Jalan Song-Jalan Upland Interchange here is 90 per cent completed, said Deputy Works Minister Datuk Yong Khoon Seng.
In a week or two, the flyover project worth RM75 million would offer a comfortable ride for road users, he told journalists after opening the Tabuan Heights Community Association’s annual general meeting at Shiang Fatt T’ng Benevolent Society here yesterday.

The Stampin MP was quick to add: “If the weather is fine in the coming week or so, the project should be completed as scheduled.”

A statement issued by Public Works Department (JKR) last Friday said the interchange would be opened to traffic tomorrow.

It advised road users to take the right lane to guide them to the new flyover, adding: “They are encouraged to allow extra travel time to adjust to the new traffic patterns.”

To mark the opening of the interchange, Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communications Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong is expected to perform a ‘drive-through’ ceremony.

The project, which began on March 17, 2011, has brought about inconvenience to road users due to gridlock and potholes near the site.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Najib Razak: Launch Royal Commission of Inquiry into corruption in Sarawak

Website: http://www.change.org/petitions/malaysian-prime-minister-datuk-najib-razak-launch-royal-commission-of-inquiry-into-corruption-in-sarawak

This petition calls on Prime Minister Najib Razak (Twitter: @NajibRazak) to act immediately to initiate a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into corruption in Sarawak and to publicly provide the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) with an unambiguous public mandate to investigate corrupt acts linked to the family of Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
Corruption is driving the destruction of Sarawak’s forests and is making its citizens poorer as well as ruining its environment. The recent Global Witness investigation ‘Inside Malaysia’s Shadow State showed exactly how Chief Minister Taib and his family are accumulating enormous wealth through his abuse of public office at the expense of ordinary Sarawakians and Malaysians.
The investigation also shows how Taib and his associates have been able to hide the money they have stolen in Singapore, using Singapore’s secrecy laws. Too much money that belongs to Malaysia’s people is being siphoned off overseas. The government must rise above partisan political interest and act in the national interest to stop this.
The abuse of power for personal gain has gone unchecked in Sarawak for decades and can only be tackled by fundamental reforms, beginning with an RCI into corruption.
Sample tweet: .@NajibRazak Taib's abuse of people, land & forests has gone on for too long. Please launch RCI to tackle Malaysia’s #shadowstate

Ministry to turn S’wak River into major tourist attraction

KUCHING: The Ministry of Tourism will allocate RM35 million to spruce up the Sarawak River and beautify its riverbanks stretching from the Waterfront up to BCCK.

This is part of the ministry’s three-year tourism development plan which emphasises enhancing infrastructure in Kuching and Miri, the two gateways into the state.

This was disclosed by Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg at a dialogue with tourism industry players at a leading hotel here yesterday,

With the ‘Open Sky Policy’ to be implemented in 2015, Abang Johari stressed that his ministry must tailor their plans for the industry to fully benefit from the policy.

With the three-year plan and the lead time to the open sky policy, he hoped tourism industry players, especially tour operators, would have enough time to plan their business to attract tourists from all over the world.

“The focus will be given to Sarawak River because we want to utilise our river for more activities,” the minister said citing the success of the Melaka River project as a good model to follow.

Abang Johari who is also the Minister of Housing said: “The ministry will also look into redeveloping the Malay villages along the riverbanks at the same time.”

The Sarawak river development plan will include a pedestrian bridge across the river and setting up of water taxi service to turn the waterway into a main attraction for Kuching city.

Abang Johari said the ministry would also look into developing the Heritage Trail and make the city centre more friendly for pedestrians.

The plan will improve facilities at national parks and information centres to provide better accessibility and information for visitors.

“We have identified three national parks namely Semengok, Bako and Lambir in Miri,” Abang Johari said.
On tourist guides, the minister said their knowledge must be broadened and improved.

“Our guides must be competent in telling the story of a place and our natural vegetation.”

On another development, he revealed that his ministry had ordered a catamaran to ferry delegates to the Borneo Convention Centre (BCCK).

“It can accommodate some 60 people. The idea is to provide delegates comfort in going there and at the same time, an opportunity to experience our natural environment,” he said.

He urged all sectors to work together as a team to achieve the three-year plan and to boost the tourism sector

Tune Hotels in Sarawak rank among country’s top 15 bargain hotels — TripAdvisor

KUCHING: Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching and Tune Hotel Bintulu in Sarawak have been ranked among Malaysia’s top 15 bargain hotels by the world’s largest travel website TripAdvisor.

The website, which had again recognised a number of Tune Hotels’ properties under its Travellers’ Choice 2013 awards, said the friendly customer service, value for money and cleanliness were among the key qualities that had put these two bargain hotels in the country’s top bargain hotel category.

‘Simply convenient with affordable price’ and ‘exudes class while being ridiculously cheap’ were among the comments made by some of the TripAdvisor reviewers of Tune Hotel Bintulu while guests at Tune Hotel
Waterfront Kuching praised it for its ‘prime location’ and ‘very good rates’.
Tune Hotel Ermita in Manila and Tune Hotel Legian in Bali also made it to the Top 25 Bargain Hotels in the Philippines and Indonesia respectively.

A notable comment for Tune Hotel Ermita was its easy access to ‘halal’ food outlets.

The listings were based on reviews and ratings by guests who have stayed at those hotels.

TripAdvisor chief executive officer and co-founder, Steve Kaufer, said this year less than one per cent of all accommodations listed on TripAdvisor received Travellers’ Choice awards, signifying the highly exclusive and select nature of the awards.

Tune Hotels chief executive officer, Mark Lankester, said as an international value hotel brand, the TripAdvisor recognition spoke volumes of their reputation and brand promise that was to give their guests the best deal and ensure value for money.

He said these successes came following the inclusion last year of Tune Hotel Downtown Penang in the Top 25
Bargain Hotels in Malaysia under the Travellers’ Choice 2012 awards.

Tune Hotel Westminster in London also won TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for two consecutive years in 2011 and 2012, while Tune Hotel Liverpool Street in London, Tune Hotel Legian in Bali, Indonesia, Tune Hotel Kota Baharu in Kelantan and Tune Hotel Danga Bay in Johor were awarded the TripAdvisor 2012 Certificates of Excellence for exceptional accomplishments in achieving consistent traveller reviews.

Tune Hotels has received over four million guests since the opening of its first hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur in 2007.

There are currently 27 Tune Hotels with 11 in Malaysia, five in the UK, four in the Philippines, four in Thailand and three in Indonesia, with coming hotels in Ahmedabad, India and Melbourne, Australia this year, he said. — Bernama

New Alternative way to seek Low Cost flight ticket! Malindo

Malindo, incidentally, is targeting its inaugural flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and Kuching between March 20 and 30.

Hoping Malindo Air will keep fares real low
IN less than a month, the new low-fare upstart, Malindo Air, will be taking to the skies.

Air travellers can then hope for bargain fares, and real good ones at that.

Those in Sabah and Sarawak can have their dream of increased connectivity come through, as they would now have another choice for a low-fare airline other than AirAsia.

But of course, those who prefer premium travel could still fly with Malaysia Airlines.

This will be their replacement for Firefly, which ceased its jet operations over a year ago. Air travellers here then were getting good bargains because the two airlines, Firefly and AirAsia, were fighting each other for passengers and were throwing fares to get them.

Two-way fares were just about RM200 and there were many happy travellers. Not that those fares are not prevalent today, but the fight for passengers was more intense then. It was unfortunate that Firefly had to abandon its jet operations, but the entry of Malindo is expected to stir things up a bit.

Cineplex operator plans to expand ops to Sibu, Miri and Sabah

KUCHING: Lotus Five Star (LFS), which opened its first cineplex in East Malaysia in Kuching in April, plans to expand its operations to Miri and Sibu as well as break into the Sabah market next year.

Its operations manager Raaj Planiyapan said its cineplex at Riverside Majestic Shopping Complex in Kuching has received very good response despite the emergence of new competitors in the city.

He pointed out that LFS is also the first cineplex to screen Tamil movies in Kuching, and still record ‘full’ house for three Tamil movies in spite of the small Indian population in the city.

“We emphasise being a simple and nice cineplex that offers affordable ticket pricing of RM5 to RM9. Compared to our ‘classier’ competitors, our ticket prices can be considered low.

“We also install the latest in sound system such as DTS, SRD and Dolby Digital Surround System so that our customers can have unforgettable viewing experience,” he told reporters here yesterday.

On the LFS Cineplex in Kuching, he revealed that LFS spent RM2 million on the renovation and upgrading work which included facelift at the lobby, improved sound system and better seats.

He pointed out that its cineplex in Kuching is one of more than 20 such centres owned by BIG Cinemas Lotus Five Star Sdn Bhd, an international cinema chain throughout Malaysia.

He said there are now more cinema-goers especially from the Chinese community at the cineplex after a slow start when it took over from Metrowealth Cinemas in April. There are four screening rooms with total seating capacity of 800, he added.

“About half of the audience are from the Chinese community. I’m also very happy that because of the promotions and the upgrading at the cineplex, we have pulled the crowd back to this shopping complex,” he said.

To a question, he said LFS also has plans to open its second cineplex in Kuching at the Boulevard Shopping Complex.

“We want to provide more options for the public in Kuching to go and watch movies, as well as give healthy competition to our competitors,” he said, adding that LFS is mulling a 3D movie screening room in Kuching.

Meanwhile, LFS is offering Hari Raya promotions of drinks and popcorn. A ticket plus regular popcorn and a regular drink, which altogether cost RM8.60, will be offered at a discounted price of RM7.50 during the Hari Raya holidays.

LFS will also be premiering two Malay movies namely Momok and Jin Notti, as well as 3D animated movie from Disney Pictures called G-Force for Hari Raya.

Asked if LFS had plans to screen Hindustani movies, Raaj did not dismiss the possibility following favourable responses to three Tamil movies screened in Kuching earlier.

“We will wait for the next Shah Rukh Khan or Salman Khan blockbuster movies to be screened here,” he said.
